Agios Nikolaos is a true gem among gems on Crete, a gorgeous little town on the eastern half of the island, one hour from Heraklion, two hours from Rethymno, three hours of spectacular driving from Chania. It is centered around a picturesque lagoon that the locals call “The Lake,” and its extensive, winding boardwalks are lined with great restaurants, cafes and bars. Several marinas – some for big boats, some for small – serve the various parts of the town. All angles in the town provide breathtaking views of the majestic Mirabello Bay and the imposing Dikti mountain range further to the east. There are a few tiny beaches within the town limits, but most of the swimming there is done by entering the crystal clear water from rock landings carved out of the landscape. Once you get in the water you will not want to come back out. Agios Nikolaus is a great place to begin forays to such destinations as the Vai beach of palm trees, Spinalonga Island with the remains of a fortress that the Venetians occupied in their final, losing battle with the Turks in the early 18th century, the Minoan palace at Malia, and many other places. Because the island is very narrow at Agios Nikolaos, the southern shores of the Libyan Sea are just a brief drive away. All text and photos © 2019 John Freedman.
