Today the Crete beach watch takes us to Falasarna (pronounced FalAsarna) on the west coast of the island. Everybody talks about it simply as Falasarna beach, but it would be more correct to speak of the beaches at Falasarna. There are, in fact, many of them, some small half-moon bays, others that are bigger and longer, some great for families with small kids, others more for adventurous swimmers. Rocky cliffs tend to separate them all from each other, although the intrepid swimmer could pretty easily swim the whole series of beaches from north to south (or vice versa). Roughly one hour from the city of Chania, the Big Beach at Falasarna is called just that and is pictured in the final three shots here. It’s a huge, long swath of sand with refreshment stands, a lifeguard station and several of those (to my mind irritating) grids of chaises lounge and thatched umbrellas. Fortunately, there is also tons of free beach to park yourself on and just as much empty water to swim in to your heart’s content. My favorite, however, is a relatively secluded beach on the north end of the chain of beaches, down below the very cool Orange Blue cafe. Here there is also a grid of chaises lounge and umbrellas for those who want them, but there is much more wide open space for the freedom-lovers among us. There is a bit of flat rock to step over on your way into the water, but it’s easy to negotiate. And once you’re in, that water will not want to let you go! When you’re done swimming for the day, there is a great little excursion not 10 or 15 minutes away – the ruins of the ancient city of Phalasarna. I've already written about that on this site.
