Kommos (aka Komos) Beach on the south side of Crete is an amazing discovery for the proper seeker. The winds off the Libyan Sea can make for fairly big waves that keep you working when you swim. And the underwater bed just off the sandy beach (with some small, smooth stones) is solid rock, albeit very flat. Some swimmers might want to bring a pair of sea-slippers. But everything else about this place is spectacular. The water, as it is virtually everywhere on the island, is clean and transparent. And how many beaches do you visit that are located next to Minoan ruins going back four millennia or more? Unfortunately, the ruins are closed to the public at present, but you can still get some good views by walking around the fenced perimeter near the beach. There is both free parking, as well as guarded parking for a grand sum of 2 Euros for the whole day. It’s worth paying the two Euros – the guy manning the parking lot is wonderful. He greets you with a friendly slap on the back when you arrive and sends you off with a big smile and a shout of “ya sas” as you leave. The beach is so enormous that, no matter how many people there are the day you come, there will be enormous swaths of empty beach for you to camp down on. The beach to the west (right) side is frequented by nudists (though not exclusively), while to the east (left) the beach curls up under a picturesque cliff. Kommos is about a 90-120 minute drive southeast of Rethymno. All text and photos © 2019 John Freedman. If you wish to reproduce, repost or use any of the text or any photo, please ask for permission.
